Shanghai, December 22, 2023 – Suzano, the world’s leading producer of market pulp, today celebrates with COSCO SHIPPING Specialized Carriers the delivery of “Green Santos”, the first vessel the latter specifically designed for Suzano.

The vessel, launched from a port in Dalian, Liaoning Province, has a DWT (deadweight tonnage) of 77,000 tons, is the largest of its kind globally and is equipped with cutting-edge, environmentally friendly technology.

Starting next year, “Green Santos” will play a key role in transporting Suzano’s pulp products from the Santos port in Brazil to various global destinations, particularly China. This vessel, along with five others of a similar size which are scheduled for delivery in the first half of 2024, is the specialized carrier built to meet the anticipated surge in pulp exports from Suzano’s Cerrado mill in Brazil, set to be opened in 2024.

Once opened, Suzano’s Cerrado mill will be the world’s largest single-line pulp plant and will increase the company’s current production capacity by 25%, an increase of 2.55 million tons. It will be self-sufficient in energy, all from renewable sources, and will export a surplus of 180 megawatts (MW) to Brazil’s grid.

Jianyuan Yang, General Manager of Woodpulp Supply Chain Business Unit at COSCO SHIPPING Specialized Carriers says:
“Green Santos is the world’s largest woodpulp specialized vessel, specifically customized for Suzano’s Cerrado project. We are excited to deliver it ahead of schedule to our valued customer Suzano. This also marks the beginning of a new chapter for Suzano and COSCO SHIPPING Specialized Carriers’ partnership.”

Jeff Yang, President of Asia (Pulp Business) at Suzano comments:
“We are proud to witness the successful delivery of the first vessel built for Suzano of this size today. With a 25% increase in Suzano’s production capacity due to the Cerrado Project, this vessel, alongside others to be delivered next year, enhances our shipping flexibility and enables us to meet the growing demand for sustainable pulp-based products worldwide.”

Suzano and the China COSCO SHIPPING Corporation first became partners in the shipping of pulp products in 2017. Since then, the partnership has expanded both in volume and in the service scope as Suzano’s business grows in China. In 2022, Suzano and COSCO SHIPPING Specialized Carriers signed a new long-term contract, whereby COSCO SHIPPING Specialized Carriers will build a batch of new vessels, tailored specifically for Suzano.
